Cop helped Telgi stay away from police custody: SIT

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 12. In an important breakthrough, the Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) found that a head constable, K.P. Reddy, who worked at the Begum Bazar police station when the fake stamp papers case was busted in August, 1999, helped the alleged kingpin of the scam, Karim Telgi, stay away from police custody and instead put him up at a nearby hotel. K.P. Reddy was arrested by SIT officials on January 9 on charges of aiding and abetting the accused in the scam and produced before the 1st Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge at his residence the same night. He was again produced before the court today and remanded to judicial custody till January 23.

The SIT officials, in their remand report, mentioned that the head constable mediated between the police officials and Telgi in running the racket, it is learnt. Sources said the SIT also charged that K.P. Reddy provided safe shelter to the accused. The fake stamp papers case was busted in Hyderabad on August 13, 1999, with the arrest of 37 persons, including Telgi, by the Begum Bazar police.

Sources said as Telgi was produced before the court on the evening of August 13, the court directed the police to keep him in police custody till next day. However, K.P. Reddy, reportedly helped Telgi stay at the hotel near Begum Bazar crossroads instead of putting him in the lock-up.
