India, Bahrain sign extradition treaty

NEW DELHI,
JAN. 13.
India and Bahrain today signed five agreements, including an extradition treaty, aimed at tackling terrorism and strengthening bilateral cooperation in dealing with crime.
The agreements, signed in the presence of the visiting Bahrain Prime Minister, Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, includes a memorandum of understanding on Foreign Office consultations.
The other agreements are on mutual legal assistance in criminal, judicial, commercial and civil matters. A bilateral investment, promotion and protection agreement was also signed.
The extradition treaty was signed by the Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, and Bahrain's Transportation Minister, Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa al Khalifa.
Bahrain is the second Gulf country after the United Arab Emirates with which India has signed an extradition treaty.
At the delegation-level talks, Mr. Vajpayee underlined the historical links between India and Bahrain and their cooperation in multilateral forum such as like the Non-Aligned Movement.
