'Oil tanker strike will not hit Pondicherry'

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 13. The oil tanker strike would not affect Pondicherry as there was sufficient stocks of fuel that would last a week, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told mediapersons on Monday.

Earlier he inaugurated the Special Pongal Bazaar organised by the Civil Supplies Corporation (PAPSCO) at Thattanchavady to sell all the commodities and earthenware needed for celebration of Pongal.

Mr.Rangasamy said that tourism was being encouraged by a giving a facelift to heritage premises.

He said that the steps were being taken to declare Tirunallar near Karaikal a temple town in view of its importance as pilgrim centre.

The Centre had agreed to sanction Rs 50 crores for the development of amenities at Tirunallar.

Special arrangements

The Director of the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Welfare, K.Elumalai, said here today that the department has made arrangements to procure petrol and diesel from Chennai to ensure that no section of consumers faced any difficulty owing to the strike.

He said that 21 tankers were drafted to bring the fuel from Chennai.

He said that the government was acting as a facilitator to ensure that the fuel was available without difficulty.

'Ration system'

Meanwhile, the Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Welfare, K. Elumalai, said with a view to tackling the situation arising out of strike by oil tankers, the department has introduced a `ration system' with an immediate effect to restrict supply of petrol or diesel to vehicles.

While two-wheelers would be given a maximum of two litres of petrol, the ceiling for the four wheelers would be five litres.

As far as diesel is concerned, truckers or lorries would be given 15 to 20 litres and buses would be issued the usual supply subject to maintenance of proper accounts.

This system would be in force till the situation improves.
