Police register cases against five mediamen

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 13. A confrontation between Revenue Department personnel and lensmen covering eviction of residents of new Jojinagar in the city is snowballing into a major controversy with the police registering cases against five mediapersons.

It all started with a group of photographers and videographers entering into an argument with the driver of the Mandal Revenue Officer's (MRO) jeep who objected to the mediamen leaning over his jeep for covering the police lathicharge on the residents of slums who were protesting against the eviction .

The driver without even warning the lensmen reversed his vehicle and three videographers leaning over the vehicle in their enthusiasm to cover the lathicharge incident fell down.

In the process they sustained minor injuries while the equipment being carried by two of them was also damaged.

The driver also allegedly abused the mediamen. Enraged over this one of the photographers pulled the driver out of the vehicle leading to tussle between the Revenue Department Personnel who were present and some mediamen.

The issue subsided with the Mandal Revenue Officer approaching the media personnel and tendering an unconditional apology to them on behalf of his driver.

Though it was expected that the matter ended there, the real trouble began late in the evening when the driver registered a complaint claiming that he was obstructed by the mediamen while discharging his duties.

The police immediately registered a case against five mediamen.

The matter was taken to the notice of the Agriculture Minister, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, who said it was a very unfortunate turn of events and that he would talk to the concerned officials and resolve the crisis.
