TDP's `vijayabheri' likely on February 22

HYDERABAD: `Vijayabheri,' a public meeting planned by the Telugu Desam in the city, is likely to be held on February 22.

The party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, while interacting with district units during a teleconference on Tuesday, suggested the date. If a change in the date was desired, the meeting, in any case, should be completed before February 25, he said.

Mr. Naidu also suggested that the `jenda panduga' of the party to publicise the Government programmes be held from February 9 to 15.

At the Assembly segment level, party general body meetings would be held on January 21. Mr. Naidu's speech would be telecast live and proceedings would begin later.

The `praja sadassu' meeting of the party at Anantapur would be held on January 28.

Bid to rob bank

KURNOOL: A gang made an attempt to rob Andhra Bank at Bairmal street in Nandyal town on Monday night.

According to reports, the robbers entered the bank by removing the window grill of the Manager's room. They tried in vain to open the safe room. The almirah in the Manager's room was also found broke open. Before leaving the place, the gang also made an attempt to break into a neighbouring house.

The bank authorities said nothing valuable was lost. The CLUES team scanned the area and collected fingerprints.

Bags rank in CA exam

VIJAYAWADA: Tunguntla Jagannadham of Mangalagiri in Guntur district obtained third rank at all India level in the CA (final) examination held in November last for which results were announced on Tuesday.

Mr. Jagannadham has obtained several distinctions before -- 19th rank in CA (Foundation), fourth rank in CA (Inter), fourth rank in ICWA (Foundation), third rank in ICWA (Inter) and first rank in ICWA (Final). He attributed his success to the encouragement given by his parents. His father is working in State Bank of India, Mangalagiri.

Police raid faction village

Cuddapah: The police cordoned off the faction-ridden Kondreddipalle village in Vemula mandal last night and conducted an intensive search of houses. They recovered a country-made rifle and 10 bombs.

The police arrested Moramreddy Ramasubba Reddy, Korra Narayana Reddy, Korra Venkata Lakshmana Reddy and Mekala Chandrasekhara Reddy during the raids. The police also searched agricultural fields and haystacks.

Three pilgrims hurt in stampede

TIRUMALA: Three pilgrims, including two women, were injured when some of the pilgrims, who were waiting in one of the queue compartments in the second complex, rushed towards the exit gate for the darshan of Lord Venkateswara on Tuesday.

In the melee, Meera bai (85), who was standing in front of the gate, along with her other family members - Durga Prasad and Premavathi -- fell on the floor. All the three injured, who reportedly came from Durg district in Chhattisgarh, were taken to the TTD-run Aswini Hospital. They were administered the first aid and later shifted to the SVRR Government hospital for further medical examination.

Priest held on theft charge

Cuddapah: The priest of Kavulakuntla Sivalayam, Kannaiah, has been arrested and remanded in connection with the theft of a Nandi icon in a temple at Vankamarri in Porumamilla mandal. Suspects belonging to various places have also been taken into custody and some persons of Hyderabad and Guntur will also be taken into custody soon, according to the Porumamilla Circle-Inspector, B. Vithal.

Farm labourer ends life

SRIKAKULAM: D. Lakshmana, 48, an agricultural labourer, has allegedly committed suicide at Srimukhalingam in Jalumuru mandal.

According to the police, Lakshmana, who consumed liquor mixed with pesticide yesterday, died on Tuesday at the Government hospital here. He reportedly took the extreme step due to mounting debts. The Jalumuru police are investigating.

APCC minority cell chief dead

HYDERABAD: Several Congress leaders expressed shock at the demise of Baquer Hussain, chairman of the APCC minority cell, on Tuesday.

Hussain passed away after a brief illness.

The PCC president, D. Srinivas, the former CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the former PCC president, M. Satyanarayana Rao and others in their condolence messages conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.

National drama festival to be held in May

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara Natya Kala Parishad, a cultural body working with active support of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), will hold the 49th national drama festival in May at the Mahati auditorium here with the financial assistance and cooperation of the TTD.

The general body of the parishad met here recently with its ex-officio president and the TTD's Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam in the chair where the decision was taken.

Artistes related to the theatre can have an exposure at the annual fair, which has events like mythological plays, social playlets, mono-actions (mythological and historical) and devotional songs.

According to P. Ranga Rao, the chairman of the festival committee, the TTD will arrange free boarding and lodging facilities for the artistes taking part in the event from various parts of the State. Participants can have the application free of cost from the secretary, S.V. Natya Kala Parishad, 45, Nethaji road, Tirupati-1. The last date for receipt of applications is February 13.

Pensioners to back Congress

NELLORE: The district unit of the State Government Pensioners' Association has decided to support the Congress in the coming elections. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the association said the State Government had so far stopped five instalments of dearness relief, besides denying them enhancement of medical reimbursement. In tune with the decision of the State Association at Kakinada, last month, the district unit also decided to support the Congress, in protest against the `indifferent' attitude of the TDP Government.

Magisterial probe

TIRUPATI: A magisterial enquiry will be conducted at 11 am at the RDO's office here on February 6 into the police firing that took place on the Sri Venkateswara University campus on September 15 last year. The Tirupati RDO and sub-divisional magistrate, P.Rami Reddy, has asked the concerned to be present at the venue on the said date and time for giving their account either orally or in writing.

Minister visits burgled temple

Cuddapah: The Minister for Women and Child Welfare, S. Saraswathi, and the Rajampet MP, G. Ramaiah, visited the Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple at Bayanapalle village in Railway Kodur mandal on Tuesday, where the 75-year-old panchaloha idols of Rama, Seetha and Lakshmana, were stolen last week and directed the police to expedite the probe.

The Minister and the MP urged the police to nab the culprits through a foolproof investigation and initiate stern action on them.

House burgled

KURNOOL: An unidentified gang burgled a house in NR Pet in the city and took away jewellery worth Rs 10 lakhs. According to reports, the house owner, Sachin Bandari, lodged a complaint with the police that his house was burgled when he was away between 8 pm and 9 pm on Monday.

Revision of voter list

CHITTOOR: Though revision of electoral rolls has been completed in some mandals of the district, officials are revising them again to check bogus voters.

Officials said they were taking all steps to delete bogus voters from the rolls, whose number was likely to touch the 2.50-lakh mark.

The date set for completion of summary revision of rolls is January 15.

Demo in support of medicos

WARANGAL: Members of Telangana Rasthra Samithi (TRS) youth wing and the Telangana Graduates Association staged a rasta-roko and dharna expressing solidarity with striking junior doctors here on Tuesday.

The youth wing members of the TRS staged a dharna at the MGM Hospital for about one hour.

Meanwhile, the health condition of members of the Junior Doctors Association who were on indefinite hunger strike was stated to be deteriorating.

Sikkim Governor at Vemulawada

KARIMNAGAR: The Sikkim Governor, V Rama Rao, offered prayers at Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy devasthanams in Vemulawada on Tuesday.

The devasthanam chairman, S Vishwanatha, felicitated the Governor on the occasion.

Earlier, the Governor participated in developmental programmes in Sircilla town. He inaugurated a road and central lighting system in the town. He was accompanied by the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Ch Vidyasagar Rao, the former MLA, Kota Srinivasa Rao, and the Collector, Sumita Dawra.

Collector holds bankers' meet KHAMMAM: The district Collector, Arvind Kumar, on Tuesday asked bankers to reschedule loans of farmers whose crops were affected by the cyclone recently. Addressing a meeting of the district-level bankers' consultative committee here, he said standing crops were damaged on 22 mandals and the loss was extensive in mandals like Aswaraopet and Dammapet.

The Government had paid a compensation of Rs 2.4 crores to affected farmers. Even the loss of cattle was also compensated by duly following the procedures. He wanted the bankers to extend liberal assistance to farmers in view of crop loss.

He wanted a grounding mela to be organised to speed up self-employment units sanctioned by government agencies. He said the mela could be organised on February 5.

Boy succumbs to burns KHAMMAM: A 13-year-old boy who was admitted to the district headquarters hospital two days ago with severe burns died on Tuesday. According to reports, Bhukya Ramulu, a seventh class student, accidentally came into contact with a live electric wire in Rangam Banjar village.

Measles cases in Warangal dt. MANGAPET (WARANGAL DT.): Due to changing atmospheric conditions, many tribals are reported suffering from measles in the mandal.

Of the eight sub-centres under the Mangapet Public Health Centre, about 50 cases were reported while the unofficial figures were put at 200 cases. Similar cases were also reported in the sub-centres under the Chunchupalli PHC.

Children's film fete KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar film society in collaboration with the district administration is organising children's film festival during the three-day Satavahana kalotsavam beginning on January 17 in the town. Award-winning films including, `Hindustan The Mother', `Patha nagaramlo pasivadu', `Bhadram koduko, `Kuchi kuchi kunamma', would be screened free of cost for children in cinema theatres. Feature films, `Annamaya', `Devullu' and `Devi' would be screened in open air theatres.

They would organise an animation camp at the SRR degree college, according to the film society secretary, Varala Anand.
