CHENNAI, JAN. 13. Leading confectionery manufacturer, Nutrine Company, will be sponsoring the Volleyball Federation of India's super league in the National League. The super league will be held at the multipurpose Nehru indoor stadium here from January 16 to 21. The total prize money on offer is Rs. 1.8 lakhs. While earlier, two or three top club teams from Tamil Nadu used to make it to the super league, this time not a single club has qualified in the men's section. In the women's section there are only two sides - Southern Railway and GKM Foundation, Kanchipuram, which is conducting the event. Last year IOB failed to defend its title and went down badly in the super league at Renukoot (UP). Briefing pressmen A. Ramana Rao, Dhronacharya awardee, said that the VFI was keen to conduct such a major event in an indoor stadium unlike last time. He further added that the winner of this event would take part in the Asian Club championship. He wanted the clubs to bring in one or two foreign players to make the event more spicy as Indian Bank did last year. This year an International Referees Clinic would also be conducted concurrently by the FIVB Development Centre here. The following teams have qualified and will play the round robin league: Men: ONGC, Dehradun, Haryana SIDC, South Central Railway (Secunderabad), Kochi Refineries, India Navy, Income-Tax (Hyderabad). Women: SC Railway, KSEB (Trivandrum), Southern Railway, Central Raiwlay (Mumbai), GKM Foundation.
