Rich tributes to Gopalan

CHENNAI, JAN. 13. Rich tributes were paid to M.J. Gopalan during a meeting organised by the Friends Society, Triplicane, at the Bharathiyar Illam on Tuesday evening. Gopalan, who represented the country in both cricket and hockey, passed away in the city on Dec. 21, 2003.

The various speakers stressed on Gopalan's sterling qualities on and off the field. While his achievements in the sporting area were recalled, Gopalan's simple living and his caring ways were also recollected.

P. Nagarajan, councillor, 89th division, said a request would be made to the City Corporation to name the North Tank Square Street in Triplicane after Gopalan.

E.K. Aramudham, vice-president, Friends Society, presided and A.R. Komedhagam, secretary, and Santhanagopalan, Treasurer, spoke on the occasion.

Among others, C.R. Vijayaraghavan, secretary, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), V.A. Parthasarathy, vice-president, TNCA, S.R. Jagannathan, former vice-president, TNCA, and K.B. Ramaswamy, former Test umpire, participated in the meeting.
