National championships from today

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 13. With Olympic preparations being at the top of the agenda, four leading women weightlifters have been allowed to skip the National championships, beginning at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Wednesday.

Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari, Kunjarani Devi, Sanamacha Chanu and Nandini Devi will continue to be at the NIS, Patiala since the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) does not want to break their schedule. The other three — Pratima Kumari, Sunaina and Nansita Devi — who were part of the Indian team at the Vancouver World championships where India clinched four berths to the Athens Olympic Games, will, however, compete in this National.

The IWF will pick up to five or six weightlifters from the 19th Women's National championship here to provide the seven lifters `sparring partners', and also as reserves in case of any eventuality.

They will also be part of the pool of lifters to undergo the conditioning camp under foreign coach Leonid Taranenko.

The IWF, after protracted discussions with the Government, has managed to get back Taranenko, who had coached Malleswari, leading to the Sydney Olympic bronze medal.

The 56th men's National championship commences on Wednesday morning with the 56-kg category while the formal inauguration is slated for the late afternoon.
