Naxal bid to attack police station

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 13. An attempt by People's War naxalites to attack the Gudem Kotha Veedhi police station in Visakhapatnam district, 90 km from here, was foiled by a special police party today.

Apparently disappointed, the extremists set off eight landmines in and around Kampamanupakala.

Preliminary reports said no policeman was injured in the blasts. Both parties exchanged fire for some time. A combing operation was continuing till late in the evening.

"We are suspecting some casualties in the other camp,'' the Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kumar Jain, said.

Three groups of naxalites, each comprising 30 to 35 members, had surrounded the police station within a radius of 10 km early in the morning. On a tip-off, the special police party undertook a "tactical combing operation."

"Frustrated over their plan going haywire, the naxalites who lay in ambush triggered the blasts at different places near Kampamanupakala," the SP said.
