Tax reliefs will benefit only the upper classes: Gogoi

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI, JAN. 13. The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, today "thanked'' the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, for providing excellent campaign material to the Congress for the coming Lok Sabha polls by announcing a host of tax concessions which will benefit "only the super-rich, the rich and the upper middle class but bring no relief to the poor and the middle classes.''

Addressing presspersons here he said: "Look, he has brought down the air fare but not touched the second class railway fare. He has reduced the prices of cell phones, computers and such other articles which are used only by the affluent. We will target all these concessions in our campaign.''

Mr. Gogoi hinted that some sitting Congress MPs who have slender chances of winning might be dropped.
