NEW DELHI, JAN. 13. The Ministry of Railways has issued orders for implementing a voluntary retirement scheme for loco drivers and trackmen (gang men) in the age group of 50 to 57 with immediate effect. In the first phase, however, the cases of those in the age group of 55 to 57 and have completed 33 years of qualifying service will be considered. Subsequently, the case of those above 53 years and below 55 years would be taken up. The "Safety Related Retirement Scheme," is expected to help improve the safety in railway operations. The request for retirement will be on voluntary basis. The scheme envisages grant of job in the railways to a ward of the employee seeking VRS. The ward would be considered for appointment in the lowest recruitment grade in the respective category from where the employee would retire. However, the conditions of eligibility for the wards of the retiring employees would be the same as stipulated for direct recruitment. The responsibility of assessment and selection would rest with the Railway Recruitment Board. The request for VRS would be considered once a year. The cut-off date will be June 30 and all conditions of appointment for the ward of those retiring will be determined for that date. The last date for submission of request for retirement and consideration of a ward for appointment under the scheme will be July 31 every year.
