Around the City

Sharp drop in humidity

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 30.1 degree Celsius and a minimum of 16.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday. Humidity, which was 94 per cent in the morning, dropped to 52 per cent in the night.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices of commodities (per kg) in the wholesale market on Tuesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Groundnut (Rs. 54), palmolein oil (Rs. 44.50), sunflower oil (Rs. 53), tamarind-flower variety (Rs. 15 to Rs. 20.50), tamarind-karipuli variety (Rs. 23 to Rs. 27), chilli (Rs. 37 to Rs. 40), rice-2716 (Rs. 11 to Rs. 11.50), rice-super fine (Rs. 13 to Rs. 13.50), rice-Samba Masoori (Rs. 13.50 to Rs. 14), black gram (Rs. 18.50) and red gram (Rs. 26).

Power shutdown

Some areas under the Kothapet division will not have power supply from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The areas that will be affected by the shutdown are: Chittinagar, Lambadipet, K.L. Rao Nagar, Bheemanavaripet, Anjaneya Vagu, Tarapet, Tailorpet, Gollapalemgattu, Edigamahal road and Brahmamgari Matham.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh Transco Divisional Electrical Engineer, G.P. Ramarao, said the shutdown was to facilitate stringing of the conductor.

Hindi students' mela

The Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha will organise examinations on February 14 and 15 as per the prior schedule. The sabha also proposes to host a Hindi vidyardhi mela on February 1 at its branch office at Machavaram.

Classes on grammar and translation will be conducted. Details can be had either in person or on phone no. 0866-2433404.

SBI to open ATM counter

State Bank of India, SIB branch, proposes to open an ATM counter on the premises of SBI zonal office building, Suryaraopet, on Wednesday.

V.N. Vishnu, vice-chairman, VGTM UDA, will inaugurate the new counter while N.V. Suryanarayana Rao, deputy general manager of the bank, will preside.

Festival for street kids

The Vasavya Mahila Mandali on Tuesday organised various programmes, including sports and games, for street children as part of Sankranti festivities. The programme was organised under the supervision of the former MP, Chennupati Vidya.

Sixty children took part in the event where they were made to play games like musical chair and lemon and spoon race, besides a singing competition. The winners were given first and second prizes while T-shirts were presented to all the participants.

Chenna Reddy remembered

City Congress leaders on Tuesday paid tributes to the former Chief Minister, Marri Chenna Reddy, on the occasion of his 85th birth anniversary. The city Congress president, Butchaiah Chowdary, garlanded the former Chief Minister's portrait while the general secretary, S. Srinivas Rao, performed the puja.
