Move to ensure service tax payment by cable TV operators

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 13. N. Krishnamurthy, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Bangalore Zone, said on Tuesday that the department was conducting periodic surveys of cable operators and trying to interact with them to ensure their compliance with service tax norms.

Speaking to presspersons after an interactive meet organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, he said 60 per cent of about 900 cable operators in Bangalore had registered their names with the department. When the operators collected monthly subscription charges, customers must insist on a bill. The bill should have the operator's registration number, he added.

The six multi-service operators in the city, who provided programme content to cable operators, were registered with the department, he said.

Cable operators have been charging 8 per cent service tax from subscribers on rental after the introduction of the tax in July 2001.
