Composting at dump yards

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JAN. 13. Chennai Corporation will take up composting of organic waste at its dumping yards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur from Pongal day.

Senior officials said places were earmarked at both the yards to take up aerobic composting of organic waste, once segregation of waste came into practice in divisions 12, 24, 37, 55, 71, 97 and 134 from January 15.

Today, the civic body organised an awareness rally at Purasawalkam (division 71) to sensitise the public to the need for segregating waste into organic and inorganic components. While organic components will be composted, some parts of the inorganic waste, including paper and metal scrap, can be recycled.

Residents have been asked to either sell the recyclabe waste themselves or hand them over to the local Corporation staff.
