Recruitment racket unearthed at AIIMS

By Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI, JAN. 13. The vigilance department of the All-India Institute of Medical Science here has unearthed a recruitment racket allegedly being run in connivance with some Class IV employees through which they planned to cheat several young men on the pretext of providing them jobs in the hospital. The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case in this regard.

It is learnt that the vigilance department came to know of the racket on January 3 when some young men and their parents from Haryana approached the hospital administrative officer and produced appointment letters saying that they had been called to join duty. The documents appeared to be fake, following which the administrative officer checked their validity and found that they were forged. The "applicants'', who were asked to pay Rs. 1 lakh each for the appointments, were then taken to the vigilance department for further enquiries.

The vigilance department took up the matter immediately and recorded the statements of all the "applicants''. On January 6, those working as middlemen for the culprits suddenly approached the department and disclosed that some of the Class IV employees had cheated them by claiming that they would get jobs for the aspirants in the hospital. On the basis of the statements, the department lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Cell of the CBI.

Investigations revealed that the culprits, comprising around 10 Class IV employees and their relatives, were running a "parallel recruitment department" from inside the hospital. On November 28, they had conducted interviews for the applicants in Room No. 5 of the Out Patient Department. The accused were planning to cheat over 100 such aspirants through this modus operandi. They had in fact prepared a list of candidates and were about to organise more interviews.

At the instance of the middlemen, the CBI detained the suspects and interrogated them one by one. While most of the accused have confessed to their involvement, the main accused is still absconding. A relative of a Class IV employee, the main accused had got a hospital identity card issued in the name of another employee. He used it to gain access to the hospital premises and allegedly roped in other Class IV employees to assist him in running the racket. While the CBI is trying to trace him, others are likely to be arrested soon.
