This Day That Age
The Lokur Court of Enquiry made the following recommendations in its report on the Indian Airlines Dakota crash at Nagpur: Checks for proficiency in instrument-flying and emergency procedures should be mandatory before renewing the licences of pilots on scheduled air transport services. Infallible mechanism should be devised to eliminate false fire warning signals. Till then, the attention of the pilots should again be drawn to the fact that fire warning light is sometimes a false alarm and does not necessarily indicate that a fire has actually broken out. The advisability should be considered of employing aircraft of better performance with only one engine functioning. Dakota aircraft should be tested to determine what all-up weight should be authorised for safe flying even when one engine has failed.
