Well done

Sir, — I wish to compliment Laloo Prasad Yadav for declining to accept the honorary doctorate offered by the Patna University.

Mr. Vajpayee set a wholesome example by declining a similar offer earlier though he deserves many honours for his literary achievements, oratorical prowess and writing skills.

I cannot but recall how Veerappa Moily, former Karnataka Chief Minister, declined the doctorate offered to him by the Bangalore University nearly two decades ago. He felt the acceptance of the offer, while holding the office of Chief Minister, would amount to usurping it.

A.V. Srinivasan,
Chennai
