BANGALORE, JAN. 14. The Mines and Geology Minister, V. Muniyappa, today informed P. Ramiah (nominated member) in the Legislative Council that 31 leases for stone quarrying granted in Survey No. 71 of Ragihalli near the Bannerghatta National Park and three stone-crushing contracts had been put on hold, and use of six crushing machines banned. Replying during Question Hour, the minister agreed with the member that stone quarries were causing pollution in villages around them, and said seven quarrying contracts granted at Hongasandra, Begur, Choodasandra, and Gollahalli in Bangalore South and North taluks had been cancelled. Seventeen applications for quarrying at Kadigenahalli Survey No. 33 and six applications in Kogilu village had been rejected. Mr. Muniyappa said that the contractors had installed crushers in quarries at Bettahalasur, Kogilu, and Bellalli villages. In October last, they were directed to adopt scientific ways of crushing stones to prevent pollution.
