Woman suicide-bomber kills four

By Atul Aneja

MANAMA, JAN. 14. A woman Palestinian suicide bomber blew herself up at the main crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, killing four Israelis and wounding seven persons.

The Palestinian extremist group Hamas and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claimed joint responsibility for the attack.

The bomber identified by the Hamas as a 22-year-old mother of two, blew herself up in a terminal building where Palestinian labourers from Gaza were transiting to an Israeli industrial complex following mandatory security checks.

Eyewitnesses said that the blast engulfed the terminal building with thick smoke.

A senior Israeli army officer said the dead included soldiers and at least one Israeli civilian. Four Palestinians were also reported wounded.

On Tuesday night, Palestinian gunmen killed an Israeli settler driving near the Jewish settlement of Talmon in the West Bank.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for that attack citing Israel's "widespread campaign" which had resulted in the killing of several of its members in recent raids.

Most Palestinian militant groups see Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers on Palestinian land as legitimate targets for attack.

Following Wednesday's incident, the leader of the Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, reportedly said that, "resistance will escalate against this enemy until they leave our land and homeland".

Israel said that the suicide bomber had managed to hoodwink personnel manning the metal detector at the crossing by saying that she had a medical surgical implant. "Because she was a woman, a female soldier was sent for to search her. She used this opportunity to enter the building, a metre or two past the door, and blew herself up," said the commander of Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
