TIRUCHI, JAN. 14. T. R. Shanmuganathan of Madurai and M. Pooja Kanth of Neyveli won the titles in the boys' and girls' under-17 sections, respectively, at the State-level chess tournament, conducted by the Tiruchi District Chess Association at the R. C. School, during the weekend. While Shanmuganathan collected five points in six rounds, Pooja tallied six points from seven rounds. Unni Krishnan of Neyveli (5) finished runner-up in the boys' section while V. N. Thiyagarajan of Paramakudi (4.5) and S. Prithivi of Chennai (4.5) finished third and fourth respectively. In the girls' category, K. Radhika (6) of Tiruvallur was runner-up, K. Jenniha Anto of Tiruchi (6) finished third and Kavin Mozhi (3) fourth. The title in the boys' under-15 division went to S. A. Kannan of Kottaiyur, who aggregated 5.5 points of the maximum six rounds. Mathivanan of Tirunelveli with 4.5 points was the runner-up. A. L. Palaniappan of Thiruvetriyur (4.5) and Ganesh Babu of Madurai (4.5) were third and fourth respectively. M. S. Nandini of Chennai (3.5 from four rounds) won the title in the girls' under-15 section. R. Preethi of Madurai (3.5) finished runner-up while the third and fourth places went to H. Sowmiya of Erode (3) and S. Pradipa of Salem (2) respectively.
