Tikina and Vicky win gold

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 14. In the absence of Commonwealth champion N. Kunjarani Devi, Tikina Gopal struck gold and gave herself a chance to be in the reckoning for the Olympic probables. Tikina lifted a total of 172.5 kg to win gold medal in the women's 48-kg class in the National weightlifting championships at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Wednesday.

Tikina lifted 77.5 kg in snatch, in the second attempt before failing to clear 83 kg in the third. In the clean and jerk, she failed in the first attempt at 95 kg but cleared it in the second and then was unsuccessful in the third, at 100 kg.

The opening day of the championship saw Police Sports Board making a head start in the medal's tally. Before Tikina inked her name on 48-kg gold medal, Police's Vicky Batta won the men's 56-kg category.

Batta, who won the overall silver medal in the Commonwealth championships in Tonga last year, won the gold medal with a total of 255 kg, 15 kg better than the second-placed lifter.

Batta, the Commonwealth Games overall bronze medallist, opened the snatch event with a weight of 110 kg. As he had the National record, of 115.5 kg held by A. K. Pandian, well within the sight, Batta went for 116 in the second attempt and cleared it. He then improved his own record further, lifting 117.5 kg in his third attempt.

In the clean and jerk, Batta cleared 137.5 in his third attempt after failing in the second and ensured himself the overall gold medal.

The results (read as snatch, clean and jerk, total):

Men: 56-kg: 1. Vicky Batta (Pol) (117.5, 137.5; 255); 2. G. Veerabhadran (Rlys) (105, 135; 240); 3. V. Vinod Kumar (TN) (105, 132.5; 237.5).
