KOLKATA, JAN. 14. The Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy limited overs league tournament for zonal teams begins at two venues of East Zone from Thursday. The defending champion South Zone takes on Central Zone at Silchar in Assam, while last year's runner-up West Zone meets East at Siliguri in North Bengal. The fifth team, North Zone, will begin its campaign on January 19 at Cuttack against host East. With so much focus on one-day games internationally, the zonal meet, returning to this part of the country after a gap of four years, will provide an insight into the country's second string players knocking for a place in the Indian squad. South, which won the trophy for the eighth time last year, will try to do an encore this season too, for it has enough talent to support its cause. North will be led by Ajay Jadeja, returning to domestic cricket this season after a long gap. Sairaj Bahutule is in charge of the West Zone. Central and East will be led by Gagan Khoda and Devang Gandhi respectively. As many as five centres, Silchar, Siliguri, Jamshedpur, Cuttack and Agartala will be hosting matches. The fixture is made in such a way that the teams will have to do a lot of travelling. Guwahati and Kolkata are the two international venues opted out thus giving Silchar and Siliguri a chance to host inter-zonal games for the first time. These two centres along with Agartala will draw big crowds. The fixtures: Jan. 15: South vs. Central (Silchar); East vs. West (Siliguri). Jan. 19: North vs. East (Cuttack); South vs. West (Jamshedpur). Jan. 23: Central vs. North (Cuttack); South vs. East (Agartala). Jan. 27: Central vs. East (Jamshedpur); North vs. West (Silchar). Jan. 31. South vs. North (Siliguri); Central vs. West (Agartala).
