PONDICHERRY, JAN. 14. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today announced that those who had defaulted on payment of the property and house tax to the municipalities and commune panchayats would be exempted from payment of the interest if they cleared the entire tax arrears to the civic bodies in three months time. Talking to presspersons here today, he said that the three-month period for payment would commence from the date of notification being issued by the Department of Local Administration. He said that the civic bodies would suffer a loss of Rs 2.4 crores because of the waiver of interest. The amount due from property owners was Rs 20 crores. The arrears could be settled either in one lump payment or on instalment basis within three months.
Action on probe report
Mr. Rangasamy said that the Government would offer full protection to the people and also their property as already action had been taken against those who had been allegedly involved in grabbing of immovable property in various parts of Pondicherry. He said that the report of the Additional District Magistrate, who had enquired into the incidents of grabbing of property, would be implemented in letter and spirit. Mr.Rangasamy said that the outlay earmarked for the current financial year (2003-2004) was being spent carefully and all the schemes contemplated by the Administration were being implemented fast. He said by the end of the financial year there would be full utilisation of funds.
