Arrangements for distribution of free dhotis, saris

DINDIGUL, JAN.14. The district administration has made elaborate arrangements for distribution of free dhotis and saris to the poor people in all taluks on the Pongal Day.

In a release, the Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, recently said 5,68,904 people below poverty line would benefit from this scheme. About 2,75,183 dhotis and 2,93,721 saris would be distributed to eligible beneficiaries.

About 85,832 dhotis and 91,367 saris in Dindigul taluk, 40,267 dhotis and 42,982 saris in Nilakottai taluk, 23,944 dhotis and 25,632 saris in Natham taluk, 37,456 dhotis and 39,994 saris in Palani taluk, 28,714 dhotis and 30,905 saris in Oddanchatram, 39,832 dhotis and 42,519 saris in Vedasanthur taluk and 19,136 dhotis and 20,522 saris in Kodaikanal taluk would be disbursed.

A three-member committee, led the Village Administrative Officer, has been formed in all centres for proper distribution of dhotis and saris. Officials from the cooperative, social welfare, land survey and agriculture departments, and town panchayat and municipal officials would take part.

While tahsildars, zonal-level deputy tahsildars, and revenue inspectors would monitor village -level committees, tahsildars, special tahsildars, deputy tahsildars, land-survey inspectors and sub-registrars of cooperatives would monitor taluk-level committees.

All committees were advised to invite representatives of local bodies, MLAs and MPs, to take part in distribution. Sufficient police force had been posted at all distribution centres for adequate protection. Already, the lists of beneficiaries had been sent to all VAOs well in advance and dhotis and saris already dispatched to all centres.
