Conference of ISHA from tomorrow

MYSORE, JAN. 14. The All-India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) here will organise a three-day national conference of the Indian Speech and Hearing Association (ISHA) from Friday.

The Director of the institute, M. Jayaram, told presspersons here today that the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, would inaugurate the conference. The Minister for Medical Education, A.B. Maalakaraddy, the Minister of State for Municipal Administration, S. Kumar Bangarappa, and the President elect of the institute, S. Manoharan, would participate in the inaugural function.

Dr. Jayaram said three oration awards along with citations would be presented during the inaugural function. The conference would deliberate on disability issues in which specialists in the field would deliver lectures. The specialists included the Member-Secretary of the Rehabilitation Council of India, J.P. Singh, the Director of Guidance Home for Adult Deaf Girls, Rita Mary, the Director of Chayataru, K.C. Panda, and the former Director of the institute, N. Rathna.

Dr. Jayaram said the seminar would focus on issues related to disability which needed national planning and organisation, expectations of the disabled, and service delivery systems for the disabled. Continuing education programmes on augmentative and alternative communication, and auditory processing disorders would be held.

He said many scientific sessions would be held during the conference. A quiz contest would be conducted for students on current issues in speech and hearing. An exhibition of hearing aids would be held. A programme, down the memory lane, would be held to provide information about the evolution of the field, institutions, clinical and academics, and technical developments in the country, he added.
