JAIPUR, JAN. 14. Former Delhi Chief Minister, Madan Lal Khurana, today took the oath as Governor of Rajasthan at a glittering ceremony attended by a good number of his friends and former constituents from the national Capital. The Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Anil Dev Singh, administered the oath of office to Mr. Khurana, who in December last had announced his retirement from active politics. The Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Pramod Mahajan, the Union Minister of State, Vijay Goel, former Governor of Gujarat, Sunder Singh Bhandari, and three former Congress Chief Ministers -- Ashok Gehlot, Jagannath Pahadia and Heeralal Devpura -- attended the oath ceremony, besides the BJP leaders and members of the State Council of Ministers. Mr.Khurana took the oath in Hindi. His wife, Raj Khurana, and children were among the huge gathering which attended the function on the lawns of Raj Bhavan. The 76-year-old Mr.Khurana succeeds Nirmal Chand Jain, who passed away while in office in September last. During the interim period, the Gujarat Governor, Kailashpati Misra, had held additional charge as the Governor of Rajasthan. Mr.Khurana is the State's 15th Governor. The Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, R.K.Nair, read out the order of the President appointing Mr.Khurana as the Governor. The oath ceremony, slated for 12-15 p.m., could be held only at 3 p.m. as the plane carrying the Governor-designate and his family could not take off from Delhi due to the weather conditions. "I will not let down the party high command which sent me here," Mr.Khurana said after taking the oath when media persons tried to elicit his reaction to the new assignment. " I will work for the development of Rajasthan and complement the efforts of the Chief Minister in this regard," he said.
