The credit system introduced in the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, in the beginning of the current academic year for post-graduate courses has received praise from teachers and students. The new method of assessment was introduced for M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses in 2002. A few other universities in the State have adopted the system since. Besides offering a more comprehensive way of assessing the achievements of the students, the credit system has provided academic freedom and opened up new vistas of learning. K. N. Panikkar, Vice Chancellor of the university, who was instrumental in introducing the system says that the credit system makes the interdisciplinary approach of the university more functional. Besides, he says, the new approach encourages teachers to specialise in their areas of interest. With 22 academic departments, the university provides scope for full play of the credit system. The minimum requirement for an M.A. degree is 64 credits. Each student is given an option to choose two courses other than his or her core course, of which one should be Sanskrit. Half of the credits come from internal evaluation of the students and the remaining from the end-semester examination conducted by the university. The internal examination comprises at least two assignments, tutorials, mid-term tests or a combination of these. With the credit system has also come grading of the students at the end of the academic programme in place of the practice of awarding marks. The grading, ranging between A plus and F, is done on a nine-point scale.
