Warning to hotels

KOCHI, JAN. 14. The Kochi Corporation has issued a warning to hotels and business establishments within its limits against the use of plastic bags of less than 30 microns. The Government has already banned the use of carry bags of below 30 microns. The Corporation has threatened to cancel the licences of business establishments that do not immediately stop using low-quality plastic bags.

Killed in accident

A 50-year-old cyclist was run over by a container trailer at Gandhi Square in Petta, near here, today. The police said that Srinivasan, belonging to Korangod House, Jawahar Road, Poonithura, died on the spot.

Award for cartoonist

Cartoonist Gopikrishnan has won this year's Vajrasooji Media Award instituted in memory of P. R. Kurup. The award carrying a purse of Rs. 10,001 will be given away at a function to be held at Panoor on January 17.

DYFI plans protest march

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will take out marches to the assistant education offices in the district on January 17 as part of its Statewide agitation demanding the ouster of the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy. The DYFI has decided to boycott all functions to be attended by the Minister

Silver Jubilee

The Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Hail Mary English Medium Residential School, Perumpally, near Mulanthuruthy, will begin on January 16. The Union Minister for State for Law, P. C. Thomas, would inaugurate the celebrations at 4 p.m., the school principal and the assistant manager told mediapersons here today.

Anniversary

The 27th anniversary of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar, will be held at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan hall on Saturday. The Chief Income Tax Commissioner, B. M. Jindal, will be the chief guest at the valedictory function.
