THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. JAN. 16. The ISRO chairman, G.Madhavan Nair, feels that it is time to dream of a nano spacecraft a single chip which is capable of performing all the functions of a satellite and which can undertake earth observation and transmission. Dr. Nair, who was inaugurating a national workshop on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) Technology for Aerospace Applications here today, said that it was the speed at which MEMS development was gathering momentum in the country which made him think along that line. He stated that such satellites which used plastic lenses and the outer case of which functioned as solar panel should be able to perform like remote sensing satellites. The idea posed many challenges to the area of MEMS technology and it was time to dream of such targets. He asked the MEMS community to reduce its dependence on imported segments and concentrate of the development of indigenous capabilities in these high-tech areas. He said that MEMS could have many applications like smart card, wearable computers, virtual reality, intelligent houses, micro therapy, artificial organ and micro robotics.
