NEW DELHI, JAN. 17. Mahesh Bhupathi, in partnership with Fabrice Santoro of France, recovered from the brink of defeat at 4-6, 3-5 in the final against Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, to clinch his 32nd career title in the $404,000 Heineken Open ATP Tour event in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday. The Indo-French combination, that had not lost a set till the final, recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory against the Czech pair, to warm-up for the Australian Open. "With Fabrice's return of serve, it is unwise to write us off," Mahesh was quoted after the match. "I think we got better during the week," said Santoro. The duo had beaten third-seeded Jared Palmer of the U.S. and Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals on Friday, after having played the quarterfinals also earlier in the day, following a rain delay.
