VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 17. The State Department of Tourism is organising some programmes during the National Tourism Week celebrations to be conducted from January 19 to 25. The effort was to make the city an important international tourist destination, the District Tourism Officer, D. Panduranga Rao, informed here on Saturday. The following were the programmes to be held during the week: A visit to the historical places and heritage walk on January 21, quiz and drawing competition for school children on January 22 (for which the schools could register with the Department of Tourism, Siripuram, telephone 2754716), a beach kabaddi competition on January 24 and a performance by the Naval Band on January 25. Along with these programmes the Tourism Department would also take up tourism promotional activities like screening of films on tourism at its office every day at 6 p.m., erection of welcome arches at the airport, railway station and bus stations, a 25 per cent discount on accommodation at the Punnami Hotels of the APTDC at Rushikonda, MVP Colony, Tyda and Araku and 10 per cent discount on fare of APTDC buses. The Vizag 10 K run was also being organised, on February 1, as part of tourism promotion exercise. There is restriction on age or sex of the participants.
