The gold cup for the State Youth festival being brought to Thrissur on Saturday.
THRISSUR, JAN. 17. Preparations are in the final phase for the 44th State School Youth Festival beginning here on Tuesday next. The State Schools Sanskrit Festival, TTI (Teachers' Training Institute) Youth Festival, PPTI (Pre-Primary Teachers' Training Institute) Youth Festival and Vidyarangam Literary Festival will also begin on the same day. Addressing a press conference here today, the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, and other reception committee office-bearers, said in all 4,500 students from different parts of the State would partake in the competitions which would be held for five days in 13 stages. The main venue will be the Corporation Indoor Stadium and the specially erected stage at the Thekkinkadu Maidan will be among the other remaining 12 venues. Competitions will be held for over 140 items. In the `Yakshaganam' event, the participants will be given an opportunity to perform and the winner will be given a consolation prize only. Among the 139 items carrying prizes, 71 will be in the School Youth Festival, 27 in the Sanskrit festival, 21 in TTI festival and 20 will be in the PPTTI festival. For the PPTTI participants there are competitions in some select teaching items as well. The Minister said steps had been taken to ensure that the competitions would be over by 10-30 p.m. unless there was unusual increase in the number of competitors because of court orders. Experts from within the State and outside had already been selected as judges for the competitions. An appeal committee has been constituted with the Director of Public Instruction (DPI), M. Gopalan, as its head. The appeals will have to be filed within one hour of the declaration of results. Trophies will be distributed at the first venue on January 21, 22 and 23 at about 6 p.m., for the items which are complete by then. The gold cup as well as the `Kalaprathibha' and `Kalathilakam' titles will be distributed at the concluding session to be held on January 24 evening. The festival will begin with a colourful cultural procession to be held in the city at 2 p.m. on January 20. The Education Minister will inaugurate the festival at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at a function to be presided over by the Cultural Affairs Minister, G. Karthikeyan. The former Chief Minister, K. Karunakaran, will deliver the keynote address. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, will inaugurate the concluding session which will be presided over by the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan. The city has been exempted from power cut during the festival days.
