Akademi fellowships announced

THRISSUR, JAN. 17. The veteran playback singer, K.P. Udayabhanu, the actress, Kozhikode

Santha Devi, and the Kathakali maestro, Kavungal Chathunni Panicker, have been selected for the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi fellowships for 2003.

The fellowships were announced at a press conference here on Saturday by the Akademi chairman, Kavalam Narayana Panicker.

The winners of the 2003 Akademi awards are S.P. Ramaswamy (vocal), Mathangi Sathyamurthy (vocal), T.V. Remani (violin), Kadanad V.K. Gopi (mridangam), Cherthala A.K. Ramachandran (mridangam), Vadakara Krishnadas (light music), Darsan Raman (light music), A.A. Chandradasan (drama), V. Chandrasekhara Vaidyar (drama), Kalamandalam Vasu Pisharody (Kathakali), Thonnakkal Peethambaran (Kathakali), Nirmala Panicker (Mohiniyattom), Ammannur Kuttan Chakyar (Koodiyattom), Dwaraka Krishnan (Kanyarkali), Niranam Rajan (Kathaprasangam), Backer Edakkazhiyoor (Arabanamuttu), Nilambur Pradeep Kumar (magic), Kozhikode Sivaraman (acting -- C.I. Parameswaran Pillai Endowment Award), G. Madhavikutty Amma (Thiruvathirakali -- T. P. Sukumaran Endowment Award), V. Sushama Kumari (Ganapraveena - Puthukode Krishnamurthy Memorial Endowment Award) and E. Vrinda Varma (Ganabhooshanam -- C. Ammalu Amma Endowment Award).

The awards and fellowships carry cash components of Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 15,000 respectively.

The veteran artistes who will be honoured with the `Gurupooja' are Guruvayur Kunjan Marar (Utsava melam), Chemancheri Narayanan Nair (acting), Kaithavana Madhava Das (ganchira), Thrikkur Rajan (melam), Punnakkal Balakrishna Marar (Mudiyettu), KPAC Johnson (acting), K.A. Aziz (drama), Korambu Subramanian Namboodiri (mridangam), Thripunithura Malathi Rama Varma (music), K. Annamala Pulavar (Tholpavakoothu), Kidangoor Kuttappan Chakyar (Koodiyattom), Pallan Joseph (acting), M. Ganapati Rao (Yakshagana), Pallippattu Kesavadev (Patakam) and Payyannur Sankara Marar (edakka). They will receive Rs. 2,000 each.

An assistance of Rs. 10,000 each will be given to the ailing actress, Adoor Bhavani, and the dramatist, Madavoor Bhasi.

The prizes will be presented at a function in March.

The Akademi vice-chairman, T. M. Abraham, the secretary, V. K. Sharafuddin, and the executive committee members, Rajan Thazhakkara, Kavil P. Madhavan, T.P. Bhaskara Poduval, Sukumari Narendra Menon and Aryanad Raju, were also present at the press meet.
