Kollam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, JAN. 17. A march taken out by the Youth Congress activists to the district Public Service Commission (PSC) office here this morning, demanding the resignation of the PSC chairman, Gangadhara Kurup, turned violent. Police said that they chased away the demonstrators when stones were thrown at the PSC office complex. The march was led by the Youth Congress State president, K.P. Anil Kumar, the general secretary, Shahida Kamal, and the district president, P. Jermias. A tension situation was created when Ms. Kamal alleged that a constable had verbally abused her. The Kollam Dy.SP, M.N. Jayaprakash, quickly intervened and pacified Ms. Kamal after assuring her that action would be initiated against the erring constable. It was in the midst of this incident that some of the demonstrators allegedly threw stones. This led to a lathicharge. However, Mr. Anil Kumar alleged that the police had beaten up the demonstrators without any provocation. Six Youth Congress activists who were injured in the lathicharge have been hospitalised. Mr. Anil Kumar said that his organisation would hold a State-wide demonstration tomorrow to protest against the police action in Kollam. He said the Youth Congress would carry on with the demonstration demanding the resignation of the PSC Chairman.
