Magisterial enquiry

Cuddapah: A magisterial enquiry will be taken up into the death of a murder-dacoity accused, Thotuku Nagaraju alias `Pamulodu' (23) of Cuddapah town, in police firing on May 22. According to a statement from the Jammalamadugu RDO, G. Venkatesam, the probe will be held at the Mylavaram MRO office on January 20. He has called upon eyewitnesses to depose before him or furnish in writing facts related to the incident.

Minority body member's visit

Cuddapah: The National Minority Commission member, K. Santha Reddy, will visit Cuddapah and Rayachoti on January 20, according to an official press release. She will address officials and non-officials at Cuddapah and later participate in a minority welfare programme at Rayachoti.

Sankranti sports

KURNOOL: Sankara Sarma of Government General Hospital gave away prizes to winners in Sankranti sports organised by the Mahila Sangham affiliated to the CPI (M), at a function here on Friday evening. The CPI (M) divisional secretary, V. Venkateswarlu, presided over the meeting. The winners, Saiswetha and Kavya Madhuri, received the prizes.

Water supply reviewed

KURNOOL: The Collector, Ajay Jain, reviewed the summer water supply arrangements for Kurnool city with irrigation and municipal corporation officials here on Saturday. Mr. Jain asked the irrigation officials to ensure storage of 0.65 tmcft in the Gajuladinne project after giving the third wetting to farmers under the canal. The remaining storage would be used to supply to the Kurnool city.

Minister's schedule

NELLORE: The Home Minister, T. Devender Goud, would participate in a number of programmes in Nellore district on Sunday. They include inauguration of police quarters, inauguration of the Government hospital, laying of foundation stone to shadi manzil and social welfare hostel at Indukurept of Nellore district, followed by a public meeting at the same place. In the afternoon, the Minister, would lay foundation stone to the dog squad kennel at the police parade grounds, Nellore and declare open the district Police Training Centre at Chemudugunta village. In the evening, Mr. Goud will unveil the statue of N.T. Rama Rao at Nartaki Centre, Nellore.

CM releases book on TDP

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has said the pace of progress and development witnessed in the State is vindication of his steadfast adherence to reforms. Andhra Pradesh is in the forefront in vigorously pursuing second-generation reforms, he says. Mr. Naidu was speaking after releasing a book titled `Emergence of Telugu Desam and an overview of political movements in Andhra Pradesh' at his residence here on Saturday. He complimented the author, R.J. Rajendra Prasad, veteran journalist and former Deputy Editor of The Hindu, Hyderabad, for his work. It not only chronicled the birth and growth of the TDP into a political force to reckon with, but shed light on political movements in the State dating from mid-40s for the benefit of the younger generation, he said.

Venkat Rao, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Press Academy, Narendra Luther, retired Chief Secretary, C. Subba Rao, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education, and Zahid Ali Khan, Editor, Siasat, recalled their long association with Mr. Prasad. They complimented the publishers, Master Minds, for pricing the book at an affordable level.

NTR a role model: Naidu

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has paid glowing tributes to his predecessor, N.T. Rama Rao, on the latter's eighth death anniversary. In a message, Mr. Naidu said Rama Rao would remain a symbol of Telugu self-respect. "Rama Rao stood for high morals and inspired revival of values in society. His efforts for the uplift of the lowest strata of society, removal of poverty and strengthening of basic infrastructure will be a model for good governance," he said.

RBI to issue new Rs.500 note

HYDERABAD: The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue a new Rs.500 note without an inset letter in numbering panel and Rs.50 denomination bank note with capital `A' letter in the Mahatma Gandhi series. Both will bear the signature of Y.V. Reddy, RBI Governor. Except for this signature, the design of Rs.500 and Rs.50 notes is similar in all respects to those issued in the Gandhi series. Other Rs.500 and Rs.50 denomination notes will continue to be legal tender, according to a press release.

Naxals kill two villagers

GUNTUR: Naxalites killed two persons at Dodleru village of Krosur mandal in Guntur district in the late hours of Friday. Panyam Koti Reddy (45), a wine shop owner, and Desu Venkata Subba Rao (45), who runs a teashop, were shot dead by naxalites. While leaving the village, they hurled bombs on a Telugu Desam Party flag post. The flag post and a tea stall were damaged under the impact.

BJP meetings on January 21, 22

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party will hold its district executive meetings on January 21 and 22. The meetings will discuss the outcome of the recent national executive meeting here and chalk out steps for political campaign.

Free Verse awards for two

Hyderabad: Free Verse Front has selected Chayaraj's `Darshini' and Yarlagadda Raghavendra Rao's `Munthapoga' for its annual awards for 2000 and 2001. Both the authors would be given Rs.5,000 each plus a memento at a function to be held later this month, a press release said here on Saturday. The front has been giving awards for over three decades.

American association plea

HYDERABAD: The American Telugu Association (ATA) while accusing some persons of selling `false documents' of the ATA for securing visas to the United States on Saturday clarified that only letters/invitations issued from the association office in America were valid. A list of invitees of the ATA would be sent directly by the office to the US Consulate. A.V.N. Reddy, president of the association, in a statement appealed to people to report any case of false document to V. Gopinath Reddy, Andhra Pradesh coordinator on phone number 30907972.

Congress appointment

Hyderabad: M. Mukesh, chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee's other than backward classes (OBC) department, in a statement here on Saturday said U. Pramila of Rentachintala mandal of Guntur district had been appointed vice-president of the OBC department.

Christian body flays VHP

HYDERABAD: The youth wing of the National Congress of Indian Christians on Saturday criticised the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) secretary, Mohan Joshi's comments against missionaries and conferring of Bharat Ratna on Mother Teresa during the VHP international convention here. C.A. Daniel, president, and G.S. Alwyn Enoch, vice-president, in a statement charged the VHP with indulging in forcible re-conversions by resorting to threats in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

Denying that people were being forced to convert as Christians, they pointed out that Mother Teresa was honoured with sainthood and Nobel Peace prize for her service to destitutes.

Tanguturi associate dead

TADEPALLIGUDEM: Pasala Suryachandra Rao, first Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Assembly and close associate of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, died at his residence here on Saturday. The 95-year-old freedom fighter is survived by his daughter and four sons. The Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party fielded him from the Alampur Assembly segment in 1952 and won the seat. Later, he also served as an MLC during 1966-72.

He discontinued his Mechanical Engineering course to plunge into the freedom movement. Suryachandra Rao, known for his versatility, had also acted in some films. He was cremated with full State honours. The Minister for Power, K. Subbarayudu, was among those who attended the funeral.

Arogyavaram is coldest place

Hyderabad: Arogyavaram in Chittoor district was the coldest place on Saturday. It recorded the State's lowest night temperature of 12 degree Celsius. Weather was dry but minimum temperatures fell at a few places in Rayalaseema. They were significantly below normal at a few places in Rayalaseema and normal in coastal Andhra and Telangana. Weather would be mainly sunny on Sunday.

Labourer found dead

KARIMNAGAR: The NTPC casual labourer, K. Narender Reddy (52), was found murdered under mysterious circumstances in Ganeshnagar locality of Karimnagar town on Friday night. According to the Karimnagar One Town SI, A. Mahesh, the man, a resident of Godavarikhani was found dead near a drain with severe head injuries. Police suspect that the victim was beaten to death with a cricket bat, which was found broken and covered with bloodstains.

eSeva centres opened

NIZAMABAD: The Minister for Major Irrigation, Kadiam Srihari, the Minister for School Education, Mandava Venkateswara Rao, and the Minister for Technical Education, Nerella Anjaneyulu, inaugurated three eSeva centres in the town on Saturday. The eSeva centres would function at Kanteswar, Pedda Bazar and Tilak garden and provides 14 utility services.

Rally against People's War

ADILABAD: Hundreds of villagers, including a large number of women, took out a rally against People's War naxalites in Tekumatla village under Jaipur police station limits, on Saturday, warning the extremists against visiting their village. Reports reaching here said the rally was taken out by villagers fed up with the frequent PW visits and the subsequent police raids. Village elders and the youth decided to pass a resolution in the gram sabha banning the entry of naxals into their village.
