TIRUPATI, JAN. 17. The State Government has set itself a target of providing irrigation facility to five lakh acres in the State and is said to be putting in place all the necessary inputs to achieve the milestone. According to a senior Government official the State Government which is keen on ensuring both irrigation and drinking water facility has earmarked Rs. 425 crores for the purpose in the budget. He indicated that budgetry allocations for the projects proposed were also being provided without much delay and pointed out that the Government was aware of the growing demand for more drinking water than for supply for irrigation. We are taking all possible steps to meet the situation, the official said. Attributing the present crisis to a prolonged dry-spell and low rainfall in the State the official pointed out that the Government in this context has succeeded to a large extent in motivating the farmers to adopt water conservation methods and change the cropping pattern too to make optimum use of the available ground and irrigation water. He, however, noted that the Krishna delta farmers must be happy that the position in their area was improving now as also that of their counterparts under the Nagarjuna Sagar right and left bank canals.
