Khurana for 'moral education' in schools, colleges

By Our Staff Correspondent

JAIPUR, JAN. 17 . The new Rajasthan Governor and Chancellor of universities in the State, Madan Lal Khurana, today appointed a seven-member committee to suggest measures for introduction of "moral education" in the colleges and universities. The committee, which has been asked to submit its recommendations by February 29, will also consider other problems of students, teachers and university administration.

Mr. Khurana had expressed his desire -- in an interaction with mediapersons here on Friday -- to make a systematic arrangement for teaching the moral values to young students to enable them to "grow up learning about their responsibilities and duties towards the country.'' He felt that the adolescents in the schools and colleges should be told about the religious concepts such as sin, virtue, faith and duty.

The decision to appoint a committee for the purpose was taken at a meeting of the Vice-Chancellors of universities presided over by Mr. Khurana. The committee's coordinator will be the Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan University, K.L. Sharma.

Mr. Khurana said the youth should be apprised of their duties in order to inspire them to contribute to the building of a modern and vibrant nation. "The pious task of introducing moral education should begin in Rajasthan, which is the land of Shakti and Bhakti (valour and piety),'' he said and expressed hope that the State would emerge as torchbearer for others in this regard.

Mr. Khurana, who had affirmed on Friday that he would not remain a "silent spectator in Raj Bhawan'', announced another decision -- to fill up the 256 vacant posts of teachers in various universities in the State -- and said he had held discussions with the State Government about these recruitments. He said he would visit each university from next month to interact with the teachers, students and non-academic staff separately in order to get first-hand account of the difficulties faced by them.

The Governor said all the problems relating to education would be solved on priority and called upon the varsity teachers to take care of all aspects of higher education that shape the personality of the youth. "Education alone shapes a prosperous nation, disciplined society and dedicated citizens,'' he observed.

Mr. Khurana also assured the Vice-Chancellors that the issue of ad hoc teachers appointed to the universities on different occasions would be solved very soon in consultation with the Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje. He sought from them the details about future plans for expansion of education in their respective universities.

The committee will have four Vice-Chancellors -- one of them being the coordinator -- and the Secretaries of the State Government's Higher Education, Technical Education and Finance Departments as its members.
