TIRUCHI, JAN. 17 . The Government has sanctioned Rs. 1.33 lakhs for giving training to 3,700 members of self-help groups (SHGs), in the first phase, in nutrition, health care and literacy, under the UDISHA scheme. The training is under way in various parts of the district, with the help of 220 peer trainers. These peer trainers had earlier undergone intensive training under the principal trainers, as part of the continuing education scheme. For augmenting the economic base of the SHGs, innovative vocational training programmes have been chalked out. As there is a growing demand for nursing assistants in hospitals and private clinics, the SHG members are imparted training in nursing too. The Mahalir Thittam has granted recognition to Visalam Educations, an institute offering a course on nursing. Already 53 women have undergone the training, sources said. Another highlight of the Mahalir Thittam, said the sources, was improving the farming skills of the SHG members. Divided into 34 groups, 1,000 SHGs in the district had undergone the training, conducted in coordination with the Agriculture department. Apart from general and basic agricultural training, the women were imparted specialised training in farm management, water management and irrigation techniques, development of herbal farms and district specific agro-technology. A total of 30 members from the Anthanallur block participated in the training, the sources added. For motivating women in bookkeeping and maintenance of accounts, Rs. 4.7 lakhs was earmarked for distribution of registers to the SHGs. Each group was trained in maintaining seven types of accounts with the help of seven registers, the sources said.
