TIRUCHI, JAN. 17 . The Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (Aavin), covering the revenue districts of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur, plans to augment milk production by 25,000 litres a day by this month-end. It has targeted to produce 2.76 lakh litres, as against the present 2.51 lakh litres. Addressing a meeting of special officers and secretaries of various milk producers' societies functioning in the Lalgudi and Tiruchi regions here recently, the Managing Director, V. T. Murugappan, said the Commissioner for Dairy Development fixed a production target of 1.50 lakh litres a day for the Tiruchi range, and another 1.26 lakh litres for the Perambalur range. He called upon farmers and officials of the milk societies to take urgent steps for achieving the target. He said he had held discussions with farmers of the Karur, Manapparai, Musiri, Kulithalai and Thuraiyur areas for boosting the production of high quality of milk. Mr. Murugappan said the daily supply from the Tiruchi union to Chennai was recently stepped up from 72,000 litres to 92,000 litres. At times, it even touched one lakh litres. The union also planned to set up a chilling plant at Vilankudi Kaikatti, on an outlay of Rs. 2.25 crores. The daily production was expected to reach 3.6 lakh litres by 2008. Referring to the union's impressive performance that helped it bag the best milk producers union award, he said the daily local sales was 72,000 litres, and about 76,800 litres was provided to the Federation. This apart, an average of 48,700 litres was supplied to the unions in Madurai and Erode for the manufacture of by-products. There was a growing demand in Chennai for the ghee produced by the Tiruchi union. The average monthly sales was 60 tonnes, he added. The Deputy Registrar of Dairy Development, K. Balakrishnan, said the daily procurement of milk in the State, through 17 producers' unions, was 18 lakh litres, and it was planned to increase the production to 21 lakh litres. A motivation campaign was launched recently by holding meetings with officials and members of the primary cooperative societies, seeking their support for development activities, he added. The Manager of the Tiruchi Aavin, Syed Kasim Ali Hussaini, and others spoke.
