Mattannavar resigns from police force

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 17. Girish Loknath Mattannavar, who allegedly planted explosives on the premises of the Legislators' Home, today said he had resigned from the post of Sub-Inspector of Police, and vowed to fight corruption in public life.

However, the Department of Police is unlikely to accept his resignation as he has been placed under suspension and is facing criminal charges. The law does not permit an accused person to resign without being cleared of the charges. He last served as Sub-Inspector in Naronha Police Station in Gulbarga district. Mr. Mattannavar claimed that he had not been served with the order of suspension.

Mr. Mattannavar said in his letter of resignation addressed to the Director General of Police (East), copies of which he released to the press, that Ministers, legislators, and senior police officers gave oral directions to policemen to protect anti-social elements and junior officers were made to function like "bonded labour".

He charged that the Government had attempted to malign his character by making him out to be a "terrorist" though he had served the department with sincerity.

He said though he had been invited to join many political parties, he had not taken any decision as yet. He said it was possible to join a political party and stay free from corruption and work for society.
