DAVANGERE, JAN. 17 . H. Shivappa, former Minister, today alleged that police had arrested many innocent persons in connection with the Malebennur clash. He told presspersons here that peace in the town had been disturbed due to the "highhandedness" of police. The situation had deteriorated further after police arrested innocent persons from the two communities, he alleged. He said arresting people was not a solution. The district administration and the Police Department should take steps to restore peace at Malebennur. Mr. Shivappa said that a "shanthi yatra" would be taken out at Harihar on Monday by the All-India Progressive Janata Dal. A memorandum would be submitted to the tahasildar urging him to take steps to restore peace at Malebennur, he added.
