Preparations on for Hoysala Utsav

HASSAN, JAN. 17. The district administration is making preparations for the annual Hoysala Utsav to be held for four days from January 31. Eleven sub-committees have been formed for the purpose.

The Deputy Commissioner, M. Maheshwara Rao, told presspersons here on Saturday that the committees would make efforts to organise the utsav in a grand manner. The utsav would be inaugurated at Halebeed and the valedictory function would be held at the Hassan District Stadium. Besides local artistes, two folk troupes from Sri Lanka and Malaysia would perform during the utsav. Folk troupes from Kerala (opana), Maharashtra (Lavani), Assam (Bihu), and Orissa (Gotipoova) were expected to participate in it. Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Hariprasad Chourasia, and Renu Majumdar, artistes, would perform, he said. Mr. Rao said C. Ashwath, music director, Vasundhara Doreswamy, dancer, Padmini Ravi, singer, Sangeetha Katti, Anuradha, Sreedhar, and Narasimhulu Vadivaati had agreed to participate in the utsav.

The Superintendent of Police, Panduranga H. Rane, said a wrestling competition would be held at the Hassan Exhibition Ground as part of the utsav. Twelve wrestlers from Belgaum and Mysore districts were expected to participate in the competition. Parasailing and water sports competitions would be held at Bhuvanahalli and the Gorur Dam on the eve of the utsav. A procession would be taken out at Halebeed to mark the inauguration of the utsav. Fourteen troupes from different parts of the State would participate in the procession. Decorated bullock carts would also participate in the procession and cash prizes would be given to the three best carts, he added. Mr. Rao said that a theatre festival would be held on February 1 and 2. A conference of poets would be held on February 1 at Kalabhavan.
