Work on Tunga project progressing

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JAN. 17. The Minister for Major Irrigation (Krishna Basin), Allum Veerabhadrappa, said here on Saturday that work on the Upper Tunga Project (UTP) was going according to schedule and would be completed by December 2005.

Speaking to presspersons after visiting the Bhadra Reservoir and the UTP here, he said the construction of a dam at Gajanur, about 10 km. from here, was nearing completion.

The work would be completed by the end of April this year when the installation of all crest gates would be over, he said.

The Minister, who expressed satisfaction with the pace of works, said they would be completed before the deadline.

With regard to the work on building canals, he said there had been a delay in taking up digging work up to the first two km. of the canal in view of the delay by the Centre in giving clearance. Now that the project had been cleared, the work would be completed soon, he added.

Mr. Veerabhadrappa, however, declined to comment on the delay in completing work on the canal up to a stretch of 60 km. saying that it would be sub judice to comment on the matter as the contractors had approached the court regarding the controlled blasting operations.

He said nearly 50 per cent of the work on the canal up to the tunnel at Ranebennur taluk in Haveri district had been completed.

Mr. Veerabhadrappa said the Bhadra and Tunga canal systems would be modernised in phases at an estimated cost of Rs. 468 crore.

The Managing Director of the Karnataka Niravari Nigam, S. Subramanya, said the District Rehabilitation Committee had accepted the demand of the families which were likely to be displaced on account of submersion in the upper stream of the UTP.
