PSC debars 18 persons

THIRUVANANHAPURAM JAN.17. The Public Service Commission (PSC) has decided to permanently debar 18 candidates for their alleged role in the leak of the question paper of the LDC examination conducted by it in Kollam district. The decision has been taken on the basis of information furnished to it by the Crime Branch IG. As part of it, the 18 persons will not be allowed to appear for the reexamination of the Kollam LDC examination being held by it on January 31.

Award for TB officer

K.Venugopal, District TB Officer, Alappuzha has been selected for the Anti-Tobacco Campaign Award for 2003 of the Regional Cancer Association, which functions in close cooperation with the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. It is for the third time that he is getting the award. He is also the only doctor in the State to win the award.

Admissions under sports quota

The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has specified that applications for admission to professional courses under the NCC and Sports quotas should be submitted in original to him with a copy to the NCC Unit Officer concerned or the Secretary, Kerala Sports Council, Thiruvananthapuram, as the case may be. However, the selection of candidates under these quotas will be based on the rank obtained by the candidate in the entrance examination. The State Government has set apart two seats for the engineering course from the current year for the President's Scouts and Guides. Candidates who wish to be considered under this category should submit a written request to the CEE along with the application forms.

Sabarimala temple fete

SABARIMALA Jan. 17. The auspicious `Kalabhabhishekom' will be held at the Ayyappa temple here tomorrow, marking the end of the `Neyyabhishekom' offering to the presiding deity during the Makaravilakku festival. The Tantri, Kantaru Rajeevaru, will perform the Kalabhapooja at the Namaskara Mandapam of the temple at 11.45 p.m.

Sudhakaran appears in court

KOCHI Jan. 17. The Forest Minister, K. Sudhakaran, today appeared before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court here in connection with the defamation case he had filed against the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan. The ACJM, Muralidharan, recorded the evidence of the Minister and posted the case for hearing on February 22. The Minister later told reporters that he was claiming Rs. 5 crores as damages from the Opposition leader.
