HYDERABAD, JAN. 17. Hot favourites Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) inched closer towards retaining both the men's and women's titles in the 59th inter-State and 68th senior National badminton championship at the KVBR indoor Stadium in Yosuufguda here on Saturday. In the men's section, PSPB defeated Delhi 3-0 in the quarterfinals and then trounced Uttar Pradesh by a similar margin in the semifinals played in the evening. In the women's section it was a similar story. PSPB first thrashed Haryana 2-0 and then blanked Kerala by a similar margin in the semifinals. In the final, the PSPB women will clash with Assam, which defeated Maharashtra 2 - 1 in the other semifinal. The Assam women put up a good display of fighting spirit and came from behind to win. The results: Men's semifinals: PSPB bt Uttar Pradesh 3-0 (Abhinn Shyam Gupta bt Ravinder Singh 12-15, 15-9, 15-6; Arvind Bhat bt Utsav Misra 15-13, 15-6; Gopi Chand/Marcus Bristow bt Jai Singh/Srikant Bakshi 15-5, 15-6). Men's quarterfinals: Railways bt Nagaland 3-0; Andhra Pradesh bt Maharashtra 3-1; PSPB bt Delhi 3-0; Uttar Pradesh bt Banks Sports Board 3-0. Women's semifinals: PSPB bt Kerala 2-0 (Aparna Popat bt M. George 11-0, 11-0; G. Jwala/Shruti Kurien bt Fathima Mohd/Aparna Balan 15-5, 15-8). Assam bt Maharashtra 2-1 (Krishan Deka Raja lost to Trupti Murugunde 4-11, 4-11; Krishna Deka Raja/Oli Deka bt Trupti Murugunde Archana Deodhar 12-15, 17-15, 17-14; Bibari Basumatari bt S. Gatnekar 11-6, 7-11, 11-5). Women's quarterfinals: Assam bt West Bengal 2-0; PSPB bt Haryana 2-0; Kerala bt Railways 2-1; Maharashtra bt LIC 2-0.
