CME on `development paediatrics' from January 19

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JAN. 17. The Kasturba Medical College (KMC) here, with assistance from Jeena Inc., U.S., is organising the third international continuing medical education (CME) and workshop on "Development paediatrics and therapeutic interventions" from January 19 to February 13.

Raghuveer of the college told presspersons here on Friday that the CME would help children with autism, cerebral palsy, pervasive developmental disorder, speech problems, Down's Syndrome, or various genetic disorders. The programme would also provide online and hands-on clinical training to the participating professionals working with children with special needs.

Experts in the U.S. organised and developed training material based on the inputs provided by the professional trainees in India through the Internet, he said. The programme coordinator, Amitesh Narayan, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, KMC, Mangalore, was in-charge of the online training programme, which commenced in April 2003, he said.

Dr. Narayan said that under the online training programme, participants received modules related to their subject for a year. This was followed by hands-on clinical training for five consecutive days in which experts from the U.S. would personally demonstrate the techniques involved.

He said Jeena Inc., established in April 2000 by Rajni and Praveen Madan in memory of their daughter, Gina, focussed on the requirements of families from India and South-East Asia having developmentally challenged children. It was a voluntary organisation that aimed to provide support services and education to developmentally challenged children and their families in the U.S.

Jeena Inc. had embarked on two projects in this regard — one at Silicon Valley, California, and the other in collaboration with the KMC, Mangalore. Through this, the institute intended to provide quality care to children with developmental and genetic disorders through non-medical care, support services, and education to children, their families and professionals working with them, Dr. Raghuveer said.

Nancy Campbell Rasch and Kathy Patten, faculty members for the training programme, would deal with "Neuro developmental therapy and myofascial release techniques" from January 19 to 23 and with "Sensory integration therapy" from January 26 to 30, respectively. Van Anna Kober would deal with the "Behavioural issues in Autism" from February 2, he said.

Grishma Desai would deal with "Speech language assessment and intervention strategies in Autism" from February 9 to 13, he said and added that only 30 participants could register to undergo training in each of the topic.

Jeena Inc. had subsidised the CME, which was estimated to cost $ 25,000 per topic, and participants had to pay Rs. 3,000 instead of Rs. 60,000.

Dr. Amitesh said around 80 children, who had been referred to Jeena, would receive hands-on attention from the visiting faculties.

Participants at the CME could also visit the website, www.jeena.org, to post queries and receive answers from the faculties.

The Chief Operating Office of the KMC Hospitals, D.P. Saraswat, said the KMC hospital, Jyothi, had all the necessary facilities to take care of developmentally challenged children with multiple-disabilities.

The Head of the Departments of Psychiatry and ENT, V.K. Bhat and K.C. Prasad, respectively, and Nutan Kamat of the Department of Paediatrics were present.
