CHENNAI, JAN. 17. Followers of M.G. Ramachandran, founder of the All-India Anna Dravida Munntera Kazhagam (AIADMK), offered floral tributes to their mentor and organised mass poor feeding and special poojas at temples on the occasion of his 87th birth anniversary today. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who is also the general secretary garlanded the statue of MGR at the party headquarters here this morning and distributed sweets to partymen. She also released a souvenir on the late leader. The party treasurer, C. Srinivasan, received it. Earlier Ms. Jayalalithaa was received by her Cabinet colleagues including, O. Paneerselvam, C. Ponnaiyan and D. Jayakumar and other party functionaries. Later Ms. Jayalalithaa drove to the Secretariat where she handed over relief to 47 persons totalling Rs. 11 lakhs from the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund. This included Rs. 25,000 each to 36 students for studies in various disciplines. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, offered floral tributes to the statue of MGR at the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University complex at Guindy. The Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, S. Thirunavukkarasar, and former Ministers, Rm. Veerappan, and S. Kannappan and the Puthiya Needhi Katchi president, A.C. Shanmugham, garlanded the statute at the MGR memorial at T.Nagar. Reports of AIADMK workers paying tributes were received from all over the State, who also organised mass poor feeding and free health camps.
