Chennaiites throng places of entertainment

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JAN. 17. Following a well-established Chennai tradition, crowds thronged various places of entertainment in the city on `Kanum Pongal' day today.

However, compared to last year, the crowd was less on the Marina, said the police authorities.

Only a few thousand people were seen on the sands of the Marina, many were seen walking towards Island Grounds, the venue of the trade fair. The police officials said till late in the evening no untoward incident, such as drowning, was reported.

Similarly, the number of cases of `missing children' was less compared to last year.

Till 6-30 p.m., 70 children were reported missing and later, many of them were restored to their parents, said a senior police officer. The reduction in the number of missing children was achieved owing to creation of four special booths along the Marina, he felt.

Similarly, at the waterfront, effective patrolling by the police prevented any drowning incidents, the officials claimed.

Heavy crowd in zoo

About one lakh people visited the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, today. Compared to last year, the number of visitors to the place had increased considerably, said zoo director, P.C.Tyagi. Nearly 600 volunteers, including the police, forest officials from the nearby districts, home guards, NCC cadets and NSS volunteers, besides zoo staff, helped to regulate the crowd. No vandalism was reported during the day.

However at Children's Park, Guindy, the number of visitors to the place on Kaanum Pongal day had come down, said the Wildlife Warden, Chennai, K.S.S.V.P.Reddy. Thanks to the presence of a good number of police personnel, no untoward incident was reported at the Park, he said.
