Khammam
By Our Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM, JAN. 17. The district administration has served legal notices on three private firms for the delay in implementation of micro-irrigation project works. They have also been asked to pay a compensation of Rs.2 lakhs each. The Collector, Arvind Kumar, who reviewed the implementation with the bankers and the agencies involved in the programme, viewed seriously the failure of the agencies to ground the works and implement them as per schedule. The Collector has said the three private firms- Jain, Netafim and Plastro Plasson -- were not on schedule in positioning their staff and getting demonstration plots ready. In all, 6,135 applications were received from farmers for coverage under the micro-irrigation project and 1,628 of them were referred to the three companies. The companies could so far complete the works related to only 48 of the applicants. In respect of the remaining applications, works are in different stages of progress. The Collector wanted the progress in the implementation of the project to be reported from time to time by the agencies concerned. He said steps were being taken to ensure consideration of the applications of all eligible farmers. He wanted the pace of the project implementation should be stepped up. The project, aimed at covering 7,700 hectares, was being implemented in the district with a financial outlay of Rs.52 crores. The district water management agency Project Director, Harikrihna, the Joint Director of Agriculture, Ramreddy and the NABARD AGM, Ramakrishna Rao, were among those who attended. The Collector of Midnapur district, S. Venkateswar Rao, who was here to attend a seminar on the sectoral reforms, visited the sanitary park and mart, which was first of its kind set up in the State at Kusumanchi village. He said that the implementation of the individual sanitary latrines programme was successful because the beneficiaries were motivated effectively. Two mandals -- Sathupalli and Dammapet -- which achieved 100 per cent coverage under the programme were posed for Nirmala Grama Puraskhar. He interacted with members of the water and sanitation committee on village-level sanitation. He gave a 15-minute slide presentation on the implementation of the programme in his district. The Khammam Collector said that one lakh sanitary latrines would be completed this year. In all 40,000 latrines were completed so far. He said Khammam would follow the Midnapur model in the implementation of the scheme.
