GUNTUR, JAN. 17. St. Joseph's High School in Guntur will be celebrating its centenary on January 21. Giving details here today at a press conference, the correspondent of the school, Mary Thomas, and the headmistress, Jaya Ratna Bala, said that the school was established on June 4, 1904, by sisters of Jesus Mary and Joseph Society of Holland. The institution had grown by leaps and bounds spreading its activity to different realms, including a hospital, one of the first ventures, an industrial school for girls, a residential high school, a secondary-grade training institute, technical teachers training institute, English Medium matriculation school, College of Education for Women, a school of nursing, a higher secondary school, a multi-purpose school, a junior college for women and an English an Telugu medium high school. All the institutions were named after St. Joseph. Academic excellence, character building and producing men and women committed to serving the society had been the goals of the institutions running under the group. The school steadfastly produced dedicated administrators, professors, social workers, architects, doctors engineers, writers, etc. The special features the school would take pride in included a school journal that strengthened relation and communication between parents and the administration of the school. The house system that facilitated the development of the children into an integrated personalities with a creative thinking and secular outlook, said the sisters. Sister Bala said that the school had value-based education system with yoga, meditation, spiritual awareness and secular prayers. The institution also excelled in sports, games, NCC, martial arts and other such extra-curricular activities. The school had been conducting seminars, exhibitions, conferences, orientation, subject-wise clubs, career guidance, remedial classes and educational tours. The school had also been encouraging children in utilising library, laboratory, computers, science spark, audio-visual aids and also taking part in cultural and literary activities. The Guntur MP, Y.V.Rao, would be the chief guest at the centenary celebrations, the Bishop of Guntur diocese, Gali Bali, would deliver the presidential message.
